Blog » 10 – Organising a Children’s Party

Planning and organising a children’s party can be confronting – you definitely don’t want your child/children to be bored! Ask them who their favourite comic book hero, cartoon character or entertainment star is – base the party round that. You can have decorations, fancy dress outfits, and music based on the theme. You could have a Batman party and make a bat cave at home.

Three other party theme ideas are:

Treasure hunt

Having costumes, jewellery, treasure maps, puzzles. This can keep them occupied for hours. Anything related to pirate stories or Treasure Island goes.

Magic parties

Hire a magician for the afternoon. Kids are fascinated by magic and marvel at how the rabbit managed to fit inside the hat, or at the magician retrieving all those handkerchiefs out of his sleeve.

Backwards party

  • On the invitation, ask guests to wear their clothes backwards.
  • Decorate upside down - forget the helium balloons and hang the balloons upside down from the ceiling. Hang banners from right to left, and have guests write their names backwards on name tags.
  • Arrange place settings underneath the table, and move the chairs aside for a game guests can play after the meal.
  • Ask people to enter through the back door, and greet them when they arrive by saying “Good-bye.”

Basic considerations for organising any children’s party:

Ask first – Many children love parties and some do not. There is nothing worse than a petulant teenager at a party - everyone will suffer!

Leave plenty of time - Plan the party a good 3 weeks in advance as there will be a lots to do - writing the guest list, perhaps a venue, ordering supplies and decorations, menu planning and choosing games to play.

Take into account the ages of the children.

Make a checklist - What do you need and in what quantities? Then you won’t have any nasty surprises on the day, like forgetting the cake!

Budget - This will help you keep control of your spending which can easily get out of hand.

Party favors – You can give the kids party favors when they arrive. Not necessarily expensive, just a nice memento for them to take away. The favors can correspond with that theme - for example, if you’re having a pirate party you can give the kids a bag of gold (chocolate) coins each.

Your fun barometer – Make sure you have fun organising your children’s party. If it’s not fun to organise, it just may not be fun for your children.
